This is my first post for my Graphic Design History class, and I can't wait for what will become of this blog. The history of graphic design is something that sounds uniquely intriguing. Hopefully my entries will educationally evolve with each new post.
As I flipped through the huge, vibrant textbook for this course, the photos of artwork and design mesmerized me. There was so much skill involved for each piece, and I became quite overwhelmed by the plethora of talent collected throughout history. It was an interesting perspective to see graphic design features of the early civilizations, which consisted of cave hieroglyphics, which suddenly evolved into more elaborate cave paintings. It was also amazing to see how design styles and materials differed amongst other countries.
When thinking about graphic design, it's popular to perceive it as virtual artwork done primarily on programs such as Photoshop or Paint software. It seems like a generally new sort of art form, only existing relatively recently. After all, the title of it wasn't coined until the 1920's. This book, however, shatters that ignorant belief by showing how detailed and long graphic design has actually been around.
